How do you know if your Porsche needs an IMS bearing replacement?
When you hear weird noises on a 996 engine it may be the dreaded IMS bearing, which supports the intermediate shaft on the flywheel end of the motor, (IMS stands for intermediate shaft ). The noise is perhaps letting you know, the bearing should be replaced.
This is the right way to do it, placed on the engine table, all easily accessible kept tidy and clean to achieve the best results.

Naturally installed bearing is the new LN engineering, improved dual row ceramic bearing, which should be a lot more reliable than the original bearing from the manufacturer.
This could be a life saving procedure for this engine as the bearing is in a difficult place and hard to get access to. Following the proper procedure is essential to have the bearing last for years to come.
My clients often ask me the question; What type of car should I buy? Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, maybe Mini Cooper? They say, since you (me) repair them you should know it best.
This is rather interesting question and there is not one fits all the answer. According to my experience, a large SUV will be twice as costly as a sedan with a small engine. The least expensive a model is, the least it will cost in fuel in repairs and maintenance.

The dreaded crankshaft bearing issues with the BMW M3 – S65 engines. Let’s get the facts straight, the actual failure rate is extremely low considering the volume of cars built over the five years, approximately twenty six thousand (2008 to 2013 ) for the general public.
This particular engine has been built as a high revving normally aspirated high output performance engine pre-dominantly designed to compete with Porsche in the various road races over the years.
The first examples were squeezed into the E46 chassis. E46 chassis where they became legendary in Europe and North America. Worth to note, the same engine has been the sole M BMW Motorsport of choice in all the factory supported M race cars the M3 and the MZ 4 from 2005 until 2015 which speaks volumes about this particular engines durably. Its safe to say the engine is well built to perform. It preforms very well under racing conditions, and performs just as well under daily driving over the life of the engine perhaps.
However, there are a few things to remember, if you own one of this cars for instance the bearing load on the connecting rod will increase 25 fold from six thousand rpm to eight thousand five hundred rpm.
Because of the high revving nature of the engine we recommend to switch from the factory recommend TSW Castrol motor oil to the more robust build Liqui Moly 10-60 motor oil. Furthermore we also recommend to shortening the oil change intervals to maximum ten thousand kilometres at most.
Also we ad (despite that BMW not endorsing any additives at least not on paper) a Liqui Moly MOS/2 (molybdenum disulfide, graphite) additive which gets embedded in the bearings at each or at least every second oil change.
If you have oversized calipers and use your S65 equipped M3 for competition purposes you should convert your lubrication to a dry sump system, regardless of cost. The factory set up not designed with extreme G forces in mind period.
We have serviced many of this cars with this maintenance method, and never had a bearing failure even at spiritedly driven M3 cars at near two hundred thousand kilometres. Draw your own conclusions.

BMW, MERCEDES BENZ, Porsche and most modern high tech automobile contains or describe their efficient powerful engines with some words as twin turbo, twinscroll turbo, valvetronic, vanos adjuster and many more.
What do they mean?
For us, auto mechanics, for auto motive technicians and for the mechanically inclined may be not so complicated, but for the general public they are rather confusing names and descriptions.
Please let me try to help you explain the core description of all of this technical information.
Twin turbo means two turbo chargers, twin scroll is a single turbo with a special way of routing of the exhaust manifold which is more beneficial for a quick way to make the turbo more efficient without using multiple turbo chargers.
Many of this technologies are meant to do one thing and really one thing to make the modern lightweight piston engines more efficient and powerful at the same time.
Efficiency is the new buzz word for most manufacturers. They spend millions on research and development trying to minimize fuel consumption by reducing the internal friction by making the internal reciprocating or moving components to the bare minimum and reducing the pumping losses by installing turbo chargers.
There are no small details escape their attention, every single component has been lightened or redesigned to the absolute lightest possible, including using the lightest motor oil to minimize friction.
Unfortunately their efficiency comes at a cost of reduced life span compared to the engines ten years ago.
What is Vanos andValvetronic?
The Valvetronic system is a BMW variable valve lift system, in combination with variable valve timing. BMW’s Valvetronic system allows infinite adjustment of the intake valve timing and duration.
BMW’s Variable Valve Timing system is called VANOS (Variable Nockenwellen Steuerung). It controls the intake and exhaust cam timing (double Vanos) independently to achieve the best power while reducing emissions and fuel consumption.

The real BMW -Mercedes-Benz and Porsche specialist. How can you tell, really? The number one thing is a real specialist will have only their specialty cars on their lot and in the shop (not a mix and match of vans and trucks and or domestic makes and models) are waiting to be looked after or repaired.
Furthermore any specialist will have relevant vehicle specific software, preferably from the manufacturer of the vehicle to be able to code program the myriad of on board computers and control modules on a modern late model German high tech automobile.
The specialist also should have most of their employees training clearly visible to the clients as part of their credentials to prove their qualifications to work on those particular automobiles. Any specialty shop should have their senior techs with decades of experience on the field which is invaluable as to know the common issues of the many different models on the specific makes of their cars.
Last but not least any real specialist shop will have no more than 3 makes as their specialty, as the demand on software and specialty tools increased in the last decade or so, so did the amount of money invested in the relevant tools and training to keep up wit the ever increasing technological advances in today’s modern but rather complex sophisticated automobiles.
As most specialty shops will tell you to have access to factory and or manufacturer endorsed training and access to the manufacturers own websites is an out most importance second to only to a real seasoned specialty shop technician which should be familiar to use the manufacturers own model designations and short forms as they should have the model and make specific subscription available at all times to their advantage for a proper diagnosis on today’s highly automated computerized automobiles.

I own a 2002 VW Jetta 1.8T and was having several of problems such as: horrible fuel efficiency, cylinder misfires, engine running lean and a noticeable hissing sound on acceleration. I brought over my Z4 on Saturday because of a ting ting ting noise and you hammered the brake pad. I left you’re shop Saturday and the noise was gone. I’ve waited and waited and the noise is still gone, you’re the best!! I won’t need my appointment of Friday to change the brakes.

I took my car to BMW dealership for an ABS, traction control error. They charged me 160.00 to diagnose and another 800.00 to fix. It took them two weeks to get the part and the end result was that they did NOTHING. Same error, no change and most importantly, they don’t care.
I took my car to Techmax, within one hour I received a call saying my car was fixed, a broken wire that needed to be soldered back together. I am writing to thank you and offer my recommendation of your shop to anyone that may be in question.
Unbeknownst to me My Mercedes Benz E class was serving as a home to a family of mice. One of the little critters had eaten their way through a wire and had eaten the shielding off another.
I took my vehicle to the Mercedes dealer first, as the car is still under warranty. I had no idea what was wrong that day I only knew that my car was not running properly. Mercedes diagnosed the problem as “mice that had eaten through the wiring” and charged me $150 for the diagnosis. Their repair estimate was $1,800 dollars. Parts, a new wiring harness, and labor of 6 hours to install. It was described as a “major repair”.
