BMW Rear Defroster on Permanently

People are saying, the right tool for the right job. Its apply for BMW repair to.  Correct?!

Late Model 435 GC BMW’s Battery is Flat Dead

One of our customer ran into a problem. His late model 435 GC BMW’s battery is flat dead. The car has been towed in.

The owner said it goes totally dead in a very short period of time. The car’s battery was 6 years old, it saw better times. Winter is comming and a 6 years old battery is old, this one is shorted and toasted. We replaced it.

A 6 Years Old Battery is a Old Battery

With new battery quickly check for excessive current draw. Tony found 15 amps steady draw at all the time, locked or not. When the ignition key is pulled out, it should go to sleep. But not so this one. Apparently something is draining the battery.

Preliminary checks done, no immediate clue which module cause the problem. Which one is acting out from the 50 or so onboard? Which one is staying on and “cooking” the battery in the process?

Failed Module. Which one?

Here comes the right tool that I mentioned in the first sentence.   Here comes Flir out to see what the human eye cannot see, which is thermal image.

Long behold the rear defroster staying on permanently.  Bingo, the module is staying on for good, she is locked on permanently as you can see on the above Flir image, it’s very colorful  from the heat emanating from the current flowing thru it.

Case closed temporary,  we disabled the rear defroster until new module arrives. Client is happy, issue has been resolved, his BMW back on the road.

It is heard of: If the rear defroster on all the time, it can do more then kill the battery. If a defective defrosters heats the rear windshield all the time, it might explode, because the cold and hot combination. So it worth to keep your eye on it…

The Importance of Proper Battery in BMW Automobiles

The battery and  the alternator is the most important component in any car’s electrical system. The  alternator provides electricity and the battery store it to run all of your fancy electronics when the engine isn’t running. When the engine is running, it plays an essential role in the proper functioning of the alternator’s voltage regulator.

To have enough clean reliable power source in a modern high tech automobile is a understatement,  with nearly a hundred individual computers on multiple networks,  all cars need a healthy, well maintained  battery to put electrical components to work. Ambient temperature has a significant impact on battery life and performance. Slow cranking on startup indicates that the battery may not be able to provide enough power to fire up the engine.

No matter how well you take care of it, eventually your car’s battery will wear out and you’ll need a replacement. The majority of BMW automobiles past 2006 demand the replacement battery to be registered in the engine ECU.  In many cases the battery should be replaced with a revised version to improve reliability. Registration and proper specification in the DME is crucial due to selective charging, which is an important part of the efficient dynamics platform.

The latest trend is lithium ion battery in the newer performance models which requires additional special care and dedicated charging equipment.

The majority of car owners approximately 78 % waits until their vehicle doesn’t start which is rather inconvenient.

Wouldn’t you rather know when it’s time to replace the aged weak battery and have it done properly by a qualified specialist?

How to keep you car battery in top working condition.

Battery Maintenance

Battery manufacturing technology changed a lot over the past few years. Today’s modern European car’s battery requires only minimal maintenance to deliver peak performance in their intended lifetime (on average 4 to 6 years in our climate).

Modern battery does not need anything other than the occasional recharge if not driven long enough daily. There is no way to top them up. In most cases they are sealed and has a closed system to prevent tempering with them.

Just because your BMW’s battery is maintenance free, it does not mean it can be dirty. All battery should be clean at all the time. Cable connection needs to be clean and tightened.
Also they should be inspected regularly for corrosion, clean connections and state of health like charge.

A lot of  battery problems are caused by dirty batteries and loose, dirty cable connections.

We recommend to check your car battery’s vent pipe/hose integrity to prevent early corrosion on the surrounding delicate electronics, like the intelligent battery sensor on most modern BMW or Mercedes automobiles.

Your alternators health will effect the battery state of charge or long term health, therefore testing the alternator regularly may save you more than a no start convenience down on the road.

Did you know most late model German cars engine computer will turn your alternator off if no charging is needed of the battery to save on fuel ?

In fact true the battery sensor the engine computer will command the alternator to be on or off, in multiple applications. For instance at full acceleration the alternator is turned off to increase engine performance as well.

Furthermore with the proper equipment we can recall your daily driving record to analyze the charging system effectiveness. Battery health and state of charge is being recorded as well, by the engine computer, until the battery has been disconnected.

We thought you may like to know how this energy management works on your fine German Import car behind the scenes.

If your vehicle is in storage at winter time or used infrequently, disconnect the battery cable to eliminate drain from electrical equipment. Keep the battery full charged at all the time, which mean you should charge it in every two – three weeks.

For extended storage, remove the battery from the vehicle and keep 100% charged. Charge the battery every month if stored at temperatures below room temperature (18 – 20 Celsius). If stored in a warmer  room,  (above 20 Celsiuses ), charge every two weeks.

Make sure you store your battery out of reach of children.

Cheap traditional, older model battery chargers are generally unsuitable to perform battery maintenance charge as they treat all batteries in the same way. They provide a steady but unregulated charge to the battery. This can easily lead to over, or under, charging of the battery and thereby decrease its lifespan.

If you work on you car’s battery, remove all jewelry from your hands, wear safety goggles and plastic gloves. You should be aware, the battery is contain corrosive acid, and might  explosive gases be present, therefore  work away from open flames and do not smoke.
