Brake Sets For German Import Cars

Give me a break, will you?

We often use a lot’s of brake components rotors and pads genuine or reputable German “aftermarket” except you may not know all the aftermarket rotors and pads has to live up to a strict European standard called the ECE R-90. It states the fact, it must be at least as good as the genuine components (at times could be better! This applies to only European made brake components. A brake pad is a brake pad, right?! In short nope!

After Market German Brake Pads

This was legislated back in 2018, some manufacturers complied with this even before that. The E designation is a compliance approval which says the brake component is build after the genuine components performance requirements at minimum therefore it must be as good but it could be better. This ensures a minimum standard across the board.

Going deeper into the subject, there is a lot of interesting information you can find, for instance Pagid (TMD friction) does exceed the original genuine brake pad specifications, ( see page 6 or the picture provided with chart) according to them. Knowing this gives us some comfort talking to our clientele, in turn you’re not installing an inferior product on their beloved fancy automobile if they choose other than genuine braking components. Suffice to say most often the manufacturer is a genuine OEM component manufacturer under contract.

Going one step further, I have seen a new legislation the pending Euro 7 vehicle emission regulation wants to reduce the brake particulate matter starting 2025 onward. I’m like jeee,  what a heck, don’t we have enough regulation already?!

Rest assured this politicians they never seize to amaze me with all the rules and regulations, if this keeps on going we will be back to horses and donkeys. I suggest to read it as you can be assured this will end up on our plate rather sooner than later. Additionally digging in there I found this interesting, there is a Spanish company called Rimsa, which is the most common supplier to the actual raw material of the said brake pads to most manufacturers.

That was quiet surprising as I thought brake pad friction material is a kind of a witchcraft, thought everyone has their own recipe to “cook ” their own concoction. Looking at some brake pad’s origins, makes sense now, it was manufactured in Spain, but often says only, Made in EU. You want to read on it more it’s here : 300 projects /30 countries/37 years their record.

If you’re interested in this subject, I highly recommend to read the New Euro Emission Regulations  in here.

Brembo Brake Pads

The range of Brembo brake pads offers more than 1,500 articles ECE R 90 approved. ECE R 90 certification is part of the 98/12/EC directive, applied and acknowledged by all European markets. The pads have a different abbreviation (E1, E2, E4…) depending on the country that has issued the certification. The certification is valid in all European countries.

The only reason I got Brembo in here, since offer some insight to this subject. I’m sure all the others do the same if you willing to dig deeper.

The conclusion,  there is way more to brakes and brake performance than you think . Give me a break is way more complex and progressing forward, going to be even more complex as time goes on .

Environmentally Friendly Brake Pads

For BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Mini.

Today we live in sensitive times, environmentally sensitive times.  Therefore we have numerous areas of the modern car and its components gone through multiple environmental revisions.

Car Tires and Brake Pads Are Going Through a Complete Change.

Two major changes come to mind: tires and brake pads are going through a complete change for a more environmentally friendly revisions. The framework for the copper and heavy metal free (more environmentally friendly) brake pads initiative has been laid down many years ago. In particular 2021 January was an important deadline for the brake pads’ friction material revisions.

Read the related document  here. Your web browser going to open the document in a new tab. You need to close that tab to return to this page.

Please note, this is a voluntary agreement by all the major manufacturers but they all signed up and agreed to a binding process initiated by the state of California and Washington. Lately I started monitoring the brake pads environmentally friendly initiative by each respective manufacturer.

We do install a lot of brakes and have been interested in how manufacturers of cars and or the aftermarket brands take charge in this important matter. I mentioned at above,  originally it started in California and Washington state, but has been more or less voluntary in Canada.

Aftermarket Break Parts for BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Mini.

To my surprise the aftermarket break parts manufacturers has been taking the lead so far.  We’ll see how it goes later, as I collect more data and keep an eye on the progress.

Please check the next photos out:  1st picture is BMW brake pad with a leaf symbol on. On the second photo is Textar brake pad from Germany, it has 3 leaf symbols on. The 3 is a Brembo Italian brake pad with 2 leaf symbol on. The 4-th brake pad is for Mercedes Benz with only a single leaf symbol on.

Environmentally Friendly Tire Technology – ECO Friendly Green Tires

Additionally the tire manufacturers are also taking charge in making more environmentally friendly tires, by using a blend of raw materials from more natural derivatives like dandelions, by Continental Tire. Orange peel by Yokohama Tire, Guayule by Bridgestone tire, and walnut shell in Toyo tires.  It’s quite interesting as these companies are taking the lead to provide a more sustainable product for the better.

I compiled a few interesting links for you if you’re interested in the subject , please enjoy.

Brake Maintenance – BRAKE Fluid Flush

Why my brakes sequel on my late model car?

Brake squeal is common issue, can be caused by several condition. For example worn pads, pads and rotors get glazed because of heat, incorrect installation and lately brake pads’ materials.

The most common type of brake pads the composite brake pads, it contains steel wool or fibers, copper fibers, that provide strength and carry heat away from the brake rotors. The downside to composites is they tend to be noisy and abrasive, causing greater wear to the rotors. As composites wear, they produce visible brake dust that sticks to the alloy wheels which then need cleaning more often as the dust accumulates.

Then comes the  ceramic brake pads. Copper fibers replaced steel in ceramic composites, producing a brake pad that reduced friction on the pads and rotors, eliminating the squeal of steel based composites. As ceramic pads wear, they produce a lighter, less visible dust that does not stick to alloy wheels. As a result, drivers find ceramics to be much cleaner. Ceramic pads are longer lasting than steel based composites as the ceramic material wears more evenly. However ceramic brake pads cost more.

And than comes the environment.

In 2010, the states of California and Washington both enacted legislation that requires brake pads, sold or installed in both states, to have reduced levels of copper and other heavy metals.

The legislation was ratified based on claims from environmental groups and regulators that as brake pads wear down, deposits of copper and other metals are left on roadways and are eventually washed into streams and rivers, thus impacting the environment.

Manufacturers of brake pads are now required to test and register friction materials in their products. They are also required to display compliance information on friction material edge codes and friction material packaging.

As a producer of brake discs, Brembo was called to contribute significantly to the creation of the new regulation, and actively participated in the working group of the Economic Committee for Europe and the United Nations. ECE-R90 Certification for the entire range of Brembo discs and brake drums. Read more about Brembo Brakes

TRW Brake Pads

TRW brake pads TRW brake pads our main replacement brake pads. They needs no break in period, owned by ZF of Germany.

To help consumers understand which of the three levels of compliance a brake pad has reached, compliance level information will be marked on the brake pads. A new set of trademarks ‘the LeafMarks’, (created by the Brake Manufacturers Council) will appear on brake packaging.

There are three different LeafMarks:

A: All formulations met all requirements. Adopted in California January 1, 2014 and Washington in January 1, 2015, friction materials must be below 0.01% Cadmium, 0.1% Hexavalent Chromium, Lead, Mercury & Asbestos fibers.

B: All metallics do not contain Copper, ceramic is less than 5% Copper. California and Washington must both be compliant by Jan 1, 2021. Friction materials containing more than 5% by weight Copper are prohibited.

N: All metallics and Copper free ceramics meet this requirement . California to comply by Jan 1, 2025, Washington by Jan 1, 2023. Friction materials containing more than 0.5% by weight Copper is prohibited.

I have to note it: We do not have this kind of legislation in Canada.

However, why would manufacturers produce one kind of brake system for US and different for Canada? It does not make sense, therefore  I believe like many other things in automotive we will silently join in.

The only other competitor to Brembo is Akebono, whom is the sole braking system supplier to McLaren F1 and McLaren road cars. Naturally we use both respective manufacturers on our clients cars, if they are looking to improve their cars braking performance.

Both braking system manufacturer has a vehicle specific friction coefficient application which has a more ceramic composition and produce 80 percent less brake dust, so you don’t have to clean your pretty alloy wheels so often.

Please be advised! There some inferior braking products sold  over the Internet which has been imported from dubious sources and may cause permanent damage to your and others health by having asbestos in them, which is a well known fact it is a carcinogen.

Asbestos poisoning is a serious issue, which could effect your or your loved ones health, since when you apply the brakes, the brake pad material will wear off the brake pad and will float in the air which could cause lung cancer. Asbestos is a carcinogen and has been banned in the west except in third world countries.
