Here\u2019s What Might Be Wrong (And How We Fixed It)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Owning a BMW i3 can be a joy, until a critical component fails. One of the most dreaded issues? A dead <strong>EME (Electronic Motor Electronics) module<\/strong>, which can render your i3 completely undrivable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Problem: A Failed EME Module<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A 2015 BMW i3 recently arrived at our shop with a <strong>&#8220;bricked&#8221;<\/strong> condition \u2014 no gear selection, no power. Diagnostics revealed a <strong>defective EME<\/strong>, the brain of the electric motor.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the U.S., early-production i3 EMEs are covered by an <strong>extended warranty<\/strong>, but <strong>Canadian owners aren\u2019t as lucky<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>brand-new EME from BMW costs a staggering $10,500 + installation + programming, <\/strong>and it\u2019s currently on <strong>backorder with no ETA<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This left us with two options:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Send the EME for out-of-country repair<\/strong> (time-consuming).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Install a used EME<\/strong> (hard to find\u2014must be an exact match for year and REX-equipped models).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We opted for a <strong>known good used EME<\/strong>, but the repair didn\u2019t end there\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Diagnostic Rabbit Hole: A Deeper Motor Issue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After replacing the EME, <strong>new faults appeared<\/strong>.
